Obama Task Force visits General Motors, Chrysler
Members of President Obama’s automotive task force will visit the Detroit area today, touring GM’s tech center in Warren, Michigan, where they will get a chance to drive a prototype of the Chevrolet Volt, before heading over to Chrysler’s Warren truck plant.
Task force members, along with advisors Steven Rattner and Ron Bloom, will also be meeting with UAW President Ron Gettelfinger. The team will meet with unnamed GM and Chrysler executives as well, though they have asked to be kept unidentified because the schedule has not been made public.
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and economic advisor Larry Summers met for 90 minutes at the White House on Friday to review and discuss the restructuring plans submitted by GM and Chrysler. The White House said it is trying to decide “how to be the best partner” to the auto industry. The panel has been accused of having little or no knowledge of the automotive industry, so the trip to Detroit may be an effort to change that image.
