Nissan is using the Sao Paulo auto show to reveal the Extrem concept, the company’s first concept car that was designed both in and for the Brazilian market. The two-door, 2+2 crossover concept is a design study and won’t be put into production.
The Nissan Extrem is built on the company’s V platform, which underpins a variety of small Nissans like the Cube, Leaf, and Micra. The Extrem concept measures 151.6 long and 69.5 inches wide, about half a foot shorter than the Nissan Juke compact crossover. Its daring styling includes a sharply raked contrast-color roof, flush door handles, cutouts in the A-pillars to improve visibility, angular headlights that recall those of the 370Z sports car, vertical foglights, and a gaping black grille with a large chrome Nissan emblem. The bright Solar Cortex paint contrasts with wraparound tinted glass that is designed to create a floating roof look.
The compact cabin has a special two-level cargo compartment with a removable cargo cover for hiding valuables beneath the steeply angled rear window. The turbine-like 19-inch wheels are designed to pass extra cooling air to the brakes. Nissan says the Extrem concept uses the same turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-four as the Juke, with a choice between front-wheel drive and torque-vectoring all-wheel drive — just like the Juke. Given the styling direction and the fact that the platform and powertrain are common, it appears that the Extrem concept is essentially a tarted-up two-door version of the Juke.
“We see it as an urban rally car, a tough little street fighter that can handle the urban jungle with agility and confidence,” project senior design manager Robert Bauer said in a statement.
Even though the Extrem will likely never make it past the concept stage, Nissan says the car’s design and styling will inform future products in the Brazilian market. Nissan plans to launch eight new models in Brazil over the next four years, in order to bump its market share there to five percent.
