Apparently, there are still a few bumps in the road ahead for Japanese automakers, as ground won by Honda last month was lost due to more supply chain issues caused by the Thailand floods. Meanwhile, Toyota continues its slow recovery in November with a 2.4-percent sales gain compared to the same month last year. But it’s Nissan that’s still the big winner of the Japanese big three, posting a sales gain of 19.4 percent in November over the same month last year.
Nissan North America
Nissan North America reported total U.S. sales of 85,182 units in November, representing a gain of 19.4 percent compared to the 71,366 units sold in November 2010. The Nissan brand itself was up 21.4 percent with 76,754 units sold. Infiniti sales increased by 3 percent in November with sales of 8428 units.
Nissan – 85,182 units sold, up 21.4 percent
Nissan claims last month’s sales of 85,182 units marks a record November for the brand, representing a 21.5-percent gain over the 63,184 units sold the same month last year. The Altima led sales volume, posting total sales of 20,613 units for a 12.2-percent gain over the 18,372 units sold November last year. The Versa reportedly set a new record for November, selling 9291 units compared to the 6724 units sold a year prior – a gain of 38.2 percent. The Rogue crossover also had a strong November, selling 10,845 units for a 27.2-percent increase over the same period in 2010. The mid-size Frontier pickup posted sales of 4324 units, a gain of 37.8 percent over the 3137 units sold November 2010. The all-electric Leaf sold 672 units – not quite as strong as the previous month, when 849 units were sold – bringing the total number of Leaf models sold to 8720. The quirky Cube compact was the worst performer of the month, selling just 203 units for a decrease of 79.8 percent over the 1003 Cube models sold November of last year.
Infiniti – 8428 units sold, up 3 percent
The Infiniti luxury brand increased its sales in November by 3 percent, rising to 8428 units sold from 8182 units in November 2010. The QX full-size SUV saw its best November ever, selling 1446 units compared to 1326 units sold the same period last year – a gain of 9 percent. The sales volume leader, though, was the G Sedan, which sold 3623 units for an increase of 26.9 percent. The FX posted sales of 1125, a 24.9-percent increase compared to the 901 units sold November of last year. The niche crossover EX35 continues to be a slow seller, with 428 units sold last month compared to 805 units in November 2010 – a decline of 46.8 percent.
Toyota Motor Sales
In November, Toyota sold 137,960 units across all of its brands, an increase of 2.4 percent over the 129,317 units sold during the same period last year. The number 2.4 seemed to be a magic one for Toyota, as not only did the company’s combined sales swell by 2.4 percent, but so did each of its major sub-brands. The Toyota division posted sales of 118,502 units, for an increase of 2.4 percent over November 2010. Lexus sold 19,458 units, gaining 2.4 percent over the previous year. Scion was down 11 percent, with total sales of 3553 units in November compared to 3834 units a year prior.
Toyota – 118,502 units sold, up 2.4 percent
The new-for-2012 Camry apparently struck a chord with its audience, as it posted sales of 23,440 units for a gain of 8.5 percent over the 20,737 units sold November last year. Despite a year-over-year decrease in sales of 4.5 percent, the Corolla was second-highest in sales volume for the Toyota brand, posting total sales of 16,115 units. The Prius was another strong seller in November, selling 15,208 units for a 42.8-percent gain over the 10,224 units sold during the same period last year. The Prius also outperformed its sales from last month, when it posted a total of 11,008 units sold. The all-new B-segment Yaris was another big winner for Toyota in November, selling 5604 units for a gain of 149.8 percent over the 2154 units sold the same month in 2010. Numbers for Toyota’s light trucks and SUVs were down across the board, with total sales amounting to 52,394 units – a drop of 9.8 percent. The Venza crossover suffered the most, with sales totaling 2610 units compared to 3364 units sold a year prior, a decrease of 25.5 percent. The mid-size Tacoma pickup, recently refreshed for 2012, gained 8.5 percent with sales of 9739 units, compared to 8616 units sold last year.
Lexus – 19,458 units sold, up 2.4 percent
The ES led sales volume for the Lexus brand with sales of 4731 units, an increase of 11.6 percent over the 4070 units sold in November 2010. The IS was second-strongest in sales volume, selling 2876 units, though its performance nearly matched that of last November, when it sold 2557 units. The SUVs in Lexus’ lineup floundered in November, with all but the RX posting sales decreases. But Lexus’ biggest loser continues to be the HS hybrid, which posted sales of just 207 units compared to 788 units sold a year prior – a decrease of 74.8 percent.
Scion – 3553 units sold, down 11 percent
Scion’s sales numbers are down across the board for November, with all models posting figures below those of the previous year. The tC coupe led sales volume with 1578 units sold, a decrease of 6.4 percent compared to the 1619 sold in November 2010. The slow-selling xD compact sold 773 units last month for a decrease of 8.4 percent compared to the 810 units sold during the same period last year. The quirky xB was down the most for the month, though, posting sales of 1202 units, a decrease of 17.9 percent over the 1405 units sold a year prior.
American Honda Motor Co.
Honda took the most damage in November, with the company citing the floods in Thailand as the primary reason for losses in sales. Overall, American Honda Motor Co. sold 83,925 units in November, representing a loss of 10.1 percent compared to the 89,617 units sold the same period last year. The Honda brand is down 9.9 percent, with total sales of 74,016 units compared to 78,899 units sold November 2010. Acura is also down, at 9909 units sold – a loss of 11.2 percent.

The new-for-2012 Civic led sales for the Honda brand, selling 17,133 units in November versus 16,562 units sold the same month in 2010. Though actual volume was higher this year, the increased number of sales days in November (25 in 2011 compared to 24 in 2010) amounted to a slight statistical decrease of 0.7 percent. The CR-V crossover was second highest in sales volume at 16,426 units sold, though took a 13.7-percent hit compared to the 18,263 units sold during the same timeframe last year. Honda’s two dedicated hybrid models, the Insight and CR-Z, both dropped significantly in sales. The Insight fell 53.2 percent, with sales of 749 units versus 1536 units sold last year. The sporty-looking CR-Z, however, was hit the hardest, with just 305 units sold in November compared to 1024 CR-Z models sold a year prior – a 71.4-percent decrease.
Acura – 9909 units sold, down 11.2 percent
Of Acura’s passenger car models, the TSX was the sales volume leader in November at 2691 units sold. That represents a slight decrease of 0.2 percent over last year’s sales of 2589 units. The RDX crossover, surprisingly, was the only model to post sales gains in November, with 1326 units sold compared to 1183 units during the same period last year – a gain of 7.6 percent. Other crossover SUVs in Acura’s lineup didn’t fare so well, with the MDX posting sales of 3308 units for a decrease of 24.2 percent, and the slow-selling ZDX selling 127 units for a decrease of 21.8 percent. Acura’s weakest link, though, seems to be the flagship RL sedan, which posted sales of just 45 units compared to 168 units in November 2010 – a drop of 74.3 percent.
