It’s been over 30 years since Nigel Mansell made his Formula 1 debut at the wheel of a Lotus, but the well-decorated driver recently found himself behind the wheel of one of Hethel’s latest racing machines. Lotus revealed that Mansell recently signed on with the company to serve as a test driver for the company’s new Type 125 Exos track car.
“Returning to Lotus in this capacity brings back a lot of memories for me,” said Mansell in a prepared release. “I’ve been watching the developments that have been taking place recently at Hethel with their ambitious race and road car projects with great interest. I’m really delighted to see that Lotus is back where it belongs: competing with the best in the top echelons of motorsport.”
The Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi will serve as the location for Mansell to put the new Type 125 through its final paces. Mansell will be joined by a few handpicked prospective buyers at the track where they will also receive some seat time in the 125, along with input from Mansell himself on getting the most out of the potent car.
We hope they take good notes, as piloting a 1433-pound car powered by a 3.5-liter Cosworth V-8 producing nearly 650 horsepower is, undoubtedly, no simple task. For us, neither is whipping up the $950,000 required to purchase a Type 125, but we wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if that figure — coupled with the expenses of running and maintaining such a vehicle — is a small sum to serious customers.
