Next-Gen Volkswagen Touareg Slated for Detroit Debut

Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid

When will we see the next-generation Volkswagen Touareg? According to Autocar, it may be as soon as the 2010 Detroit auto show.

The next-generation Touareg will be the first iteration of Volkswagen’s SUV to be offered in hybrid form. The hybrid Touareg will closely resemble concepts shown at the 2009 Los Angeles auto show that utilized a supercharged V-6 (cribbed from Audi), a 38kW electric motor, and an eight-speed automatic transmission. VW’s hybrid design sandwiches the motor between the engine and transmission, allowing the electric motor to power all four wheels independently or along with the combustion engine.

The new Touareg is expected to reach dealers in the second half of 2010, and the fanciful (and efficient) hybrid model will likely arrive around the same time.
