In any of its multiple forms, Pagani’s Zonda was — and is — an incredible car. The company is hard at work at its successor, which may be the first Zonda offering to officially be street legal in the United States.
In a speech to reporters in his home country of Argentina, Pagani’s founder, Horacio Pagani, reportedly told reporters that the Zonda replacement — named the C9 — will be a completely new vehicle from the ground up. The C9’s chassis will be made of both carbon fiber and titanium, and will meet NHTSA crash test standards, allowing him to potentially sell the wildly expensive super-exotic in the U.S.
For the C9, Pagani will continue to use Mercedes-Benz power. Instead of the dated 7.3-liter V-12 currently found in the Zonda, the C9 will likely use the twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12 found in various Mercedes-Benz cars, including the S600 and AMG’s 65-series models. Pagani says power should be in the realm of 690 hp and 737 lb.-ft. of torque.
Pagani plans on winding down Zonda production in September, allowing the Italian company to prepare for C9 production. Pagani plans on building approximately 40 cars a year, and each will likely run buyers at least $1.3 million.
