The Subaru XV Crosstrek isn’t exactly new, as it made its first appearance last September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. This week, however, marks the public debut of the new Subaru in the U.S. at the New York auto show. The bright-orange Subaru was unveiled under flashing colored lights to the sound of throbbing electronic music.
“We saw a gap for a small Subaru crossover in our lineup,” said Subaru executive vice president Thomas Doll. “We know how to make crossovers that people want to buy.”
The XV Crosstrek follows the same strategy as the old Subaru Outback Sport. It’s a raised up, slightly more rugged station wagon that essentially bridges the gap between a traditional wagon and a crossover. Chunky styling cues include roof rails, and black cladding to protect the fenders and door sills. As with every Subaru (except, of course, the new BRZ sports coupe), the XV Crosstrek has all-wheel drive.
With 8.7 inches of ground clearance, the XV Crosstrek is clearly made for people who find a regular Impreza sedan too pedestrian, but don’t want the size (or cost and fuel consumption) of an SUV. We’d guess the market for vehicles of this ilk is somewhat small in the U.S.
Power comes from a 2.0-liter boxer-four engine with 148 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque, and buyers can choose between a five-speed manual and continuously variable transmission. Standard equipment includes Bluetooth, cargo hooks, and a six-speaker sound system with iPod connectivity.
