A 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 is replacing AMG’s normally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8, providing more power yet with 25 percent better fuel economy.
The twin-turbocharged direct-injection engine will see use in the S63 AMG sedan and CL63 AMG coupe. Possibly in the 2012 model year, the smaller engine could find its way underneath the hood of the E63 AMG, as well. AMG models from the 2010 model year are shown.
As for the E63, new models will get an improved interior, starting with Artico leather on the dashboard and on the door. The center console gets a black piano lacquer finish. For 2011, the E63 AMG’s fuel economy is unchanged from the 2010 model year, leading us to believe that an engine swap will happen — at the earliest, in the 2012 model year for this sedan.
Producing 536 horsepower in the S63 AMG and CL63 AMG the 5.5-liter engine makes 18 horsepower more than in the outgoing engine. While that power bump may not sound impressive, consider the outgoing engine’s impressive 465 lb-ft of torque. The new engine is rated at 590 lb-ft of torque.
On top of all this is the expected increase in fuel economy. Mercedes-Benz says the new engine gets 25 percent better fuel economy. A 2010 S63 AMG and CL63 AMG get 11/18 mpg. 2011 models may achieve approximately 14/22 mpg city/highway.
Potential owners of AMG vehicles may not care about a few mpgs but these engine improvements could make the vehicles less expensive. The gas guzzler tax on an S63 AMG is $3000 according to ratings on FuelEconomy.gov.
