New Garmin GPS Accessory Taps Engine Data, Encourages Green Driving

Garmin Ecoroute

Modern hybrid vehicles may have sophisticated screens educating drivers on how best to improve fuel economy, but a nifty accessory from Garmin offers similar data to those who drive older vehicles.

So long as the vehicle has an OBD-II diagnostics port (and most vehicles from the mid-’90s onward do), Garmin’s ESP module can parlay vehicle information into a display on the GPS unit’s screen. The device monitors acceleration, braking, speed, and fuel consumption, and gives drivers an overall “green” score. Unlike typical OEM systems that provide the same data, Garmin’s device allows users to parlay their fuel consumption to a route map, showing which areas around town could stand to use some light-footed driving.

The ESP device will run you about $149.99, and is only compatible with Garmin Nuvi 1000-series units with Bluetooth connectivity.
