As Mini prepares for its third-generation Cooper, the revised small cars, including the Clubman and Convertible models, will receive new styling, engines, and features across the lineup.
Up front, the family face on certain Cooper models has been fitted with integrated ducts on the front fascias. New wheel designs are being introduced, as are new paint colors and design schemes with a unique combination of color, wheels, roof design, and interior setup intended to appeal to a range of old and new Mini fans: Classic, Rally, and Scene. All Minis will be equipped with LED brake and taillights while the front bumper cover has also been certified to be less damaging to the pedestrian, assuming it should come in contact with one.
Inside, Mini aficionados will notice the sound system and air conditioning controls utilize new designs and a high-resolution video screen has been placed in the large, centrally located speedometer. Driver or passenger need only to plug in with an iPod or other portable video player to use the screen.
In addition to the aesthetic changes, the new powertrains are less fuel-thirsty than in previous years. To appease fuel economy and carbon emissions regulations, direct injection will make its first appearance in the next-gen lineup. More efficient turbochargers, reduced internal engine friction, and three-cylinder configurations will reportedly soon be the norm, although an exact rollout schedule hasn’t been released yet. A dual-clutch transmission is reputedly on the drawing board and a Mini Cooper D Convertible is brand new, although it won’t be available in the U.S.
Mini will launch the new Cooper line in September, and let’s not forget the soon-to-arrive Countryman.
