Classic etiquette suggests that the gift for a 45th wedding anniversary is a sapphire, but Mercedes-Benz’s anniversary gift to the AMG division isn’t blue. Instead, it’s a special edition of the super-powerful SL65 AMG convertible.
It’s been 45 years since Mercedes’ AMG division first began, so Mercedes-Benz is celebrating in the only way it knows how: by making 45 special edition cars and selling them as collector’s items. For starters, the paint on the outside of this sapphire-anniversary car is painted a special hue of Designomagno graphite, a gray paint with a satin finish. On top of that the car has a few exterior trimpieces made out of real carbon fiber, including a cross strut, both wing mirrors, and the lip spoiler. Other bits, including the radiator grille slats, the daytime running light surrounds, and the hood wing fins, are finished in chrome.
On the inside, there’s plenty more pieces from the Designo collection, including diamond-stitched leather on the door panels and the seats. The seat backs–of course–feature AMG logos, and the convertible hardtop is lined with nappa leather. Finally, each car is adorned with a badge on the ashtray cover that shows exactly which of the 45 special edition units you’re driving.
Other than that, it’s the same SL65 AMG we’ve seen before: it features a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V-12 engine making 630 hp and 738 lb-ft, which his sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission. The 45th anniversary model also gets an AMG sports exhaust system, all the better to advertise that you’re driving a car that can go from 0-60 mph in 4.0 seconds.
Pricing or availability haven’t yet been announced (for the special edition model or the regular SL65), but you can expect to pay a hefty premium for the latter and even more for the former. In the meantime, Mercedes also made a cheeky video reminding you just how powerful the SL65 AMG is: have a look and let us know what you think.
