When rumors of an Aston Martin city car first started appearing we were shocked, and we were more shocked to actually see the car appear at the Geneva Motor Show in March. We’d better get used to the idea, however, as Aston Martin confirmed its Toyota iQ-based Cygnet is headed to production next year.
“Our customers need a small car for urban and city use,” Dr. Ulrich Bez, CEO of Aston Martin says, “and they want the right tools for the right job, to downsize creatively without compromising intelligence, artistry, and personality.”
Aston Martin’s Cygnet — no matter how badly the English marque wants you to forget this — is based on a lowly Toyota iQ, albeit significantly reworked for luxury.
“Whatever we do, we do right,” Bez said. “If we do performance, we do performance; we don’t downsize or compromise our sports cars. The Cygnet needs to satisfy the demands of emissions and space. It is a car without compromise, just like every other Aston Martin.”
As Bez calls the Cygnet, a city car done right, it features bespoke body panels to make give it a more refined look, including the requisite Aston Martin grille, suitable for an Aston city car. The interior is also brought up to Aston Martin standards, with a plethora of hand-stitched leather covering just about every surface. The car will be built by hand side-by-side DB9s, V8 Vantages, and Rapides at the firm’s Gaydon, Warwickshire, England plant.
While these bits and pieces provide info about the car, it still doesn’t answer why this car? Bez would have you think it’s designed in a manner similar to a dinghy on a yacht, an accoutrement to a full-size Aston. The Cygnet, along with the four-door Rapide, signal Aston’s desire to enter new markets as the Cygnet would “support our sports cars by providing a greater degree of freedom in the urban context.” The more likely reason however, is it’s a quick and dirty (or should we say clean?) way to significantly drop Aston’s CO2 emissions.
Whatever the reason for the Aston Martin Cygnet, one this is for certain, it will be joining the storied brand’s sports cars sometime next year. Aston Martin hasn’t released any details on powertrain or pricing yet, but early reports indicate it will be priced around $32,000 and only be available to current Aston Martin owners at first.
