Although AMG is best known for creating high-performance versions of Mercedes-Benz production cars, AMG is also the brand’s motorsports division that produces racing cars available for purchase by teams competing in various racing series. This latest AMG concept bound for the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show previews a new racer based on the CLA45 AMG compact sport sedan that could be adapted for multiple international race series.
The standard CLA45 AMG is powered by a 360 hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder mated with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel-drive. Since many racing series feature 2.0-liter turbo engines, Mercedes says this basic powertrain will remain for the racing version, but that modifications could be made to power output and drive type for different sets of racing regulations. For instance, the CLA45 AMG racer could be available with either front- or all-wheel-drive depending on racing spec requirements.
The CLA45 AMG Racing Series Concept receives many aerodynamic tweaks, including a new front and rear apron, a front splitter, flared side sills, cooling vents for engine and brake cooling, and a carbon fiber rear wing. The concept displays a red, black, and silver paint scheme that highlights the curves of the swoopy CLA bodywork and special Dunlop racing tires are mounted on lightweight AMG alloy wheels.
Inside, there is a full steel roll cage along with carbon fiber racing seats from Recaro which includes preparation for the HANS head and neck safety device. The CLA45 AMG’s interior is severely stripped out for the racing version, with only the basic dashboard shape remaining, here trimmed in carbon fiber.
The CLA45 AMG Racing Series Concept follows in the footsteps of the successful Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3, which is built to FIA GT3 racing specifications and competes in numerous race series all across the globe. 67 SLS AMG GT3 models have been sold since its debut in 2010 and compete in series like the ADAC GT masters, the FIA GT3 European Championship, and the FIA GT1 World Championship.
There is no word yet when the racing version of the CLA45 AMG will be made officially available, but look for the concept to officially debut in Frankfurt next week.
