At $135,205, including destination, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG isn’t exactly an affordable conveyance for most consumers. But new reports suggest its wild four-door, six-wheeled pickup cousin – the G63 AMG 6×6 – will carry a price tag that’s nearly five as great.
According to Autocar, the massive G63 AMG 6×6 will carry a price tag of nearly 379,000 Euros, which presently works out to roughly $511,612.
Yes, that’s a metric ton of moolah, but to further put things in perspective, that’s nearly $205,000 more than the already ultra-expensive twelve-cylinder G65 AMG (226,322, including tax), which isn’t sold in our market. For the price of one G63 AMG 6×6, you could also buy three “normal” G63 AMGs in the U.S., or four 2013 G550s, and still have a little cash left over for your fuel slush fund. Likewise, the G63 AMG 6×6’s price tag could also buy you two copies of the new 2013 SLS AMG GT coupe, or if you’re willing to drop another $50,000, two examples of the 2013 SLS AMG Black Series.
None of those vehicles, however, quite offer the same experieince as the G63 AMG 6×6. Yes, the G63 shares its twin-turbocharged, 544-hp, 5.5-liter V-8 with other G63 models, but not its tandem rear-axle arrangement, its 45-inch beadlock rims, its external-reservoir Ohlins dampers, central tire inflation system, five differential locks, or Unimog-esque portal axles. Or, for that matter, the ritzy rear seating that looks to be fit for a king, oil baron, or sheikh. Fitting, as we can’t imagine what the fuel costs are for something like this – normal G63 AMG models, fitted with start/stop technology and a seven-speed automatic, still only manage to earn EPA ratings of 12/14 mpg city/highway. We can’t imagine adding weight, complexity, and an extra axle improves those figures, meaning this AMG G-wagen might just be best suited for clients that own an oil field (or seven).
All G-Class models, including the G63 AMG and G550 sold on our shores, are almost entirely hand-assembled, even down to the welded body structure. Still, the G63 6×6 will likely require even more attention, perhaps in its own little corner of the Magna Steyr factory in Graz, Austria. Autocar claims no more than 30 will be built in total. G-wagens are always low-volume affairs, but Magna usually builds 54 G-wagen models each day.
Sadly, even if you had the means to pick up something as choice as the G63 AMG 6×6, you wouldn’t have the opportunity – at least, not here in North America. Word has it the six-wheeled behemoth won’t be sold on our continent. And, despite loosely being derived from the six-wheel-drive G-wagens sold to the Australian military, the G63 AMG 6×6 won’t be sold in right-hand-drive form whatsoever.
Maybe this is all for the better – after all, it might be a bit tricky to maneuver a three-axle G-wagen that’s 19 feet long and seven feet wide through the parking lot outside Whole Foods.
