We saw it at the Paris Motor Show last year, and now we get to see it again in photos and videos. These teasers show McLaren P1 supercar prototypes testing at racetracks, as McLaren prepares for the car’s anticipated public reveal at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
Sadly, McLaren still has yet to reveal many details on the new supercar. Despite admitting that it will use brakes from Akebono, oil and other fluids from Mobil, and tires from Pirelli, McLaren remains mum on technical details. We expect the P1 will use a highly tuned twin-turbo 3.8-liter V-8 with as much as 700 hp, possibly augmented to 1000 hp by a pair of electric motors.
The development cars seen here look almost identical to the concept shown in Paris and other test mules spotted by our spy photographer. That’s no surprise — McLaren P1 program director Paul Mackenzie previously told us the Paris concept car was “95 percent of what the production car will look like.” The convoluted, curving body shape has been rigorously tested for maximum aerodynamic performance. The camouflage tape on these cars, meanwhile, retains its unique patterning that consists of line drawings of famous race circuits.
Other promising details for the McLaren P1: it will use carbon-fiber construction, just like the lesser MP4-12C; it may have an airbrake or other active aerodynamics; an F1-style pushrod suspension is in the cards; and each of the 500-car production run will cost at least $1.1 million. The new video, embedded below, also reveals that the McLaren P1 will occasionally spit blue flames from its giant center exhaust tip.
McLaren reaffirms that its goal for the P1 is to “to produce the best driver’s car in the world on road and track.” The production car is expected to debut publicly in March at the Geneva Motor Show, and ultimately go on sale at the end of the summer.
