Aside from the controversial name-change, almost everyone is eagerly anticipating the upcoming BMW M4, and the 435i and 428i coupes are only about a week away from showrooms. But some customers are seeking a middle ground between the deliberately and unapologetically performance-oriented M4, and the regular 435. For customers in Europe at least, there will be an intermediate option that balances M4-like performance, and the comfort and elegance of the regular 4 Series model. Ladies and gentlemen, we present you the Alpina B4.
The only factory-authorized Alpina model currently sold in the U.S. is the BMW 750-based B7, which offers higher performance than BMW’s regular 750i sedan, but lighter weight and better handling than the V-12-powered 760Li. As of now, any expansion of the Alpina lineup in the U.S. is unknown, but it’s likely the seven series will remain the only Alpina model officially sold through BMW dealers.
Alpinas are known for having slightly less horsepower, but slightly more torque than their M counterparts, as well as being commonly equipped with automatic transmissions, compared the manual or dual-clutch transmissions more typical of the M models. Our spy shooter says to expect about 410 hp out of the B4′s twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six, in addition to available all-wheel-drive, a feature that will not be offered on the upcoming M4.
