Photos of the latest feisty Audi wagon have leaked online: this is our first look at the Audi RS4 Avant, which will most likely debut next month at the Geneva Motor Show.
The car’s appearance isn’t too surprising, not least because we spied a test mule lapping the Nürburgring in Germany last year. Compared to the regular A4 Avant, the Audi RS4 gets a bigger mesh grille, larger wheels, a new front fascia with gaping lower air intakes, a bold chrome rear diffuser flanked by big oval exhaust tips, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and carbon-fiber interior trim pieces.
We expect the Audi RS4 Avant — there won’t be a sedan version, at least not initially — will share its underpinnings with the new 2012 RS5 coupe. That means the fast Audi will get a 4.2-liter V-8 making 450 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission sending power to a Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Audi says the RS5 will dash to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, but we expect the slightly heavier RS4 Avant may need an extra tenth of a second to hit the benchmark.
As in the RS5, expect this new Audi to have its top speed limited to 155 mph unless you pay extra for Audi to unlock a 174-mph limiter. The car will also probably be fitted with carbon-ceramic brakes, 19- or 20-inch wheels, and firmer suspension.
