Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann wouldn’t tell us much about the successor to the company’s Murcielago, but sources from Europe are slowly leaking information on the latest raging bull. The latest intel suggests the “New V-12,” as some insiders are calling it, will produce upwards of 700 horsepower and be mated to a seven-speed, single-clutch, paddle-shifted manual transmission.
What? No dual-clutch transmission? According to Autocar (citing an unnamed source), implementing a dual-clutch gearbox would be “too complex and too expensive.” While that may be, we fail to see why it wouldn’t be a worthy pursuit. After all, the design could be amortized by spreading its use across other premium brands in the Volkswagen Group (i.e., we’d kill for one in an Audi R8). Regardless, buyers are said to also have the option of a seven-speed sequential gearbox. No traditional manual transmission is in the works.
Sources are also saying the center-oriented driving position usually found in Sant’Agata’s beasts has been nixed, thanks to an all-new lightweight aluminum space frame chassis. It’s essentially a clean slate for engineers to incorporate their preferred layout with cutting-edge technology.
Given the estimated 700-plus horsepower rating, and its smaller build, this Lambo will surely be fast. Insiders have mentioned a 0-to-62-mph sprint time of around 3 seconds, and it will likely top out above 200 mph.
