Auto thieves are getting very clever in their efforts to steal vehicles. A fraudulent car hauler has posed as a legitimate trucking company commissioned to transport vehicles, and more than a dozen luxury vehicles have been stolen from dealerships in several states.
Currently under investigation by the FBI, the car hauler has posed as Atlas Towing and Recovery of Illinois, a genuine company. A release form the National Auto Auction Association states “If anyone does attempt to pick up (vehicle) releases using this company name, notify local law enforcement immediately.”
A similar scam occurred over the summer at an auction held by Manheim Auto Auction. A fake hauler posed as a company hired by the winning dealerships to transport newly purchased vehicles. The robbers accessed the winner’s vehicle and dealership information via the Internet. It looks like just about anybody is susceptible to identity theft.
