The 2013 Acura RDX and 2012 BMW 3 Series sedan have just been named Top Safety Picks by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Improved roof strength was key to both the 2012 3 Series and 2013 RDX earning IIHS Top Safety Pick titles. The previous-generation Acura RDX was only rated as “marginal” for roof strength, while the prior BMW 3 Series was rated as “acceptable.”
The IIHS notes that the 2012 BMW 3 Series’ Top Safety Pick ranking applies only to the redesigned F30 sedan, since the E92 2012 BMW 3 Series Coupe/Convertible has yet to be refreshed. When the 3 Series coupe/convertible is updated later this year, it may become the BMW 4 Series. Most 3 Series rivals including the Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class have already been rated as Top Safety Picks.
The 2013 Acura RDX joins compact luxury rivals like the BMW X3, Infiniti EX35, and Volvo XC60 as IIHS Top Safety Picks.
