Las Vegas isn’t too far from desert terrain, so we’re not too surprised to see Hummer roll into the 2009 SEMA show with two desert race trucks and a pair of concepts built to live off-road.
The H3 Moab is inspired by the legendary off-road trail of the same name in Utah. As could be expected, the Moab – built from the H3 Alpha – is designed to tackle the most challenging trails. The 300-hp, 5.3-liter V-8 is left relatively untouched, but the Moab sports a 4-inch suspension lift and 35-inch tires. A brush guard and custom underbody protection help defend the bottom of the vehicle, while six roof-mounted lamps illuminate the path ahead. An integrated winch will help keep the driver out of almost any trouble that could be encountered. The H3 Moab may not have the H1′s slick central tire inflation system (CTIS) to adjust tire footprints, but a built-in air compressor does give drivers the ability to deflate and inflate tires for trail use.
The H3T Sportsman is a more subtle take on the H3, but is no less interesting. Built off the H3T Alpha, the 5.3-liter V-8 receives new heads, new camshafts, and a custom exhaust system. These modifications boost power from 300 hp to 370 hp. The Sportsman rides on Hummer-designed 20-inch wheels, but tires have been beefed up to 35-inch BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A rubber. Storage space in the 5-foot bed has been increased with storage boxes, and extra trail lights and a rescue winch round out the upgrades.
The Hummer display will also highlight the Rod Hall’s H3 Alpha (a two-time victor at the Baja 1000) and Robby Gordon’s Dakar-winning H3. Both Hall and Gordon will be present on Hummer’s stand on the opening day of the show.
