Honda recently announced that it will compete in the GT500 class of the 2010 Super GT Series. What vehicle will it campaign? The Japanese automaker will run its newest baby, the HSV-010.
The HSV-010 is competing in the higher of the two classes offered in the Super GT Series, will have somewhere in the neighborhood, but not eclipsing 500 hp (per regulations for the class). The car will have a somewhat different configuration from the departed NSX as its engine will move to the front of the car; however, it will remain rear-wheel drive. Honda will now utilize a V-8 engine with 3.4-liters of displacement, a big departure from the V-6 found in the NSX.
Governing rules of the Japan Automobile Federation only require that a car only be “production feasible”, allowing Honda to slip through the cracks with its new racer. Does this mean that the HSV-010 will birth an NSX successor? Who knows, with Honda’s on-again off-again NSX replacement vehicle, we’re not getting our hopes up.
The HSV-010 will make its world debut at the first race of the 2010 Super GT Series on the weekend of March 20-21. A Honda has won more than one-third of the Super GT races it has entered since joining the series in 1996. Competitors include the Nissan GT-R and Toyota SC 430. Other contenders include an Aston Martin, Ferrari, and Lamborghini, though all are privately owned.
