The refreshed-for-2013 Honda Civic is king of the compact segment. Honda sold 39,458 Civics last month, making it far-and-away the best-selling C-segment car in August. In its rearview mirror was the Toyota Corolla, with 26,861 cars sold, and in third place was the hot-selling Hyundai Elantra, with 24,700 units sold.
For the second consecutive month, Honda has run away with the compact segment monthly sales crown. The Japanese automaker managed to sell 39,458 examples of the Honda Civic in August, beating the second-place Toyota Corolla’s 26,861 sales by over 12,000 units. That number, however, is expected to rise as the 2014 Corolla hits dealers this month. Finishing third was the Hyundai Elantra, with 24,700 units sold, just barely retaking its spot on the podium from the Chevrolet Cruze.
With the Elantra in third, the Chevrolet Cruze is relegated to fourth place this month, with 23,909 units sold – an 8.0-percent year-over-year decrease, despite the arrival of the new Cruze Diesel. On the Cruze’s tail in August was the Ford Focus, with 20,372 cars sold, good for fifth place. In a distant sixth was the Volkswagen Jetta and Jetta SportWagen, with 16,280 units sold. Jetta sales may continue increasing once the 2014-model-year cars debut with a new volume engine.
Sitting in seventh place is the Nissan Sentra, with 12,605 units sold. Eighth place went to the Mazda3, with 11,031 cars sold – we expect the Mazda3′s ranking to slowly rise as the new 2014 Mazda3 continues to hit dealerships around the country. With 8019 units sold, the Subaru Impreza and Impreza WRX combine for a ninth-place finish.
August’s compact auto sales were rounded out by the Dodge Dart with 6901 units sold, the Big Test-winning 2014 Kia Forte in 11th with 6469 cars sold, and the outgoing Volkswagen Golf/GTI, with 3010 hatchbacks sold.
