Although we can no longer buy anything quite like the Australian Commodore sedan in the United States, Holden’s performance division — Holden Special Vehicles, or HSV — is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its legendary 1990 CS ClubSport by reviving the name for a limited-edition sport sedan.
“If we step back 20 years to 1990, this really was a watershed year for the HSV brand,” said Tim Jackson, general manager of marketing and communications for Holden. “Not only did we introduce our first ClubSport model in June, but 1990 also represented our first Bathurst victory with the Holden Racing Team, who are also celebrating 20 years of success this year.”
The idea behind HSV’s ClubSport vehicles was to bring the lightweight, high-performance features of a racecar to a street-legal sedan. The original ClubSport, built off the VN Commodore, used a 5.0-liter V-8 producing 248 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Today’s ClubSport model has far eclipsed that figure, as GM’s 6.2-liter LS3 V-8 cranks out 425 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque.
All 20th Anniversary ClubSport models will sport several unique exterior features to mark the brand’s birthday. Each limited-edition model will wear a modern interpretation of the “CS ClubSport” decal that adorned the original car, and sport unique 20-inch silver “Pentagon” wheels. Additionally, each ClubSport will come with HSV’s sport suspension package and a leather-trimmed interior — both typically options –at no extra cost.
Only 100 of these special edition ClubSports will be produced. It will start at AUS $66,690 (U.S. $55,990) with a six-speed manual transmission, while cars equipped with a six-speed automatic will run AUS $68,690 (U.S. $56,670).
