Hyundai Veloster Concept

Ever since we first laid eyes on the HND-3 Veloster concept, we wondered when Hyundai would see fit to push the compact coupe into production. Come January 2011, our wait will apparently be over. Reports suggest a production form of the car will launch at the 2011 Detroit auto show.

Motor Trend says the car will make its debut appearance in the Motor City, and ultimately wind up at dealers later in 2011 as a 2012 model. Don’t call it Veloster, though. We’ve heard the Tiburon name may be revived for the new offering, but MT says a final name has yet to be decided.

Look for the car to be based off the Elantra’s front-wheel-drive platform. Power will likely come from a new direct-injection 1.6-liter I-4, although the company’s new 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4, which will make an appearance in both the 2011 Hyundai Sonata and the 2011 Kia Sportage, may also be an option.
