The highly competitive 2010 Super GT race season got underway at the Suzuka Circuit in Japan last weekend. And with Honda’s all-new HSV-010 itching for the win, it was the mighty Nissan GT-R that beat all, coming from mid-pack to the top of the field in a matter of minutes.
The winning HIS Advan Kondo GT-R driven by Joao Paolo de Oliveira and Hironobu Yasuda qualified 10th, but thanks to multiple wrecks during qualifying and at the beginning of the rain-drenched race, it was quickly bumped up to secure the win. At the end of the first lap, the GT-R was already in fifth place. This marks the team’s second consecutive opening round win and its fourth in Super GT.
Crossing the checkered flag 9 seconds later in second place was the Eneos SC430 (Daisuke Ito / Bjorn Wirdheim), followed six seconds after by the Raybrig HSV-010 (Takuya Izawa / Naoki Yamamoto). Amazingly, it was Yamamoto’s first-ever race.
Like this year’s Formula 1 season, Super GT will surely get more exciting as the months go by. It’ll be interesting to see how well the Honda stacks up against the Nissan with dry conditions and some fine tuning dialed in. The next race is scheduled for March 4 at Okayama International Circuit, so stay tuned for the results.
