Given its well-known penchant for hysterics, there are few who would argue that the Porsche 911 GT2 needs more power, but Porsche has gone and done it anyway. They gave it 620 horsepower and called it the 911 GT2 RS and to own one of the 500 they’re building you’ll need to call your banker and request a $245,000 withdrawal. Right now.
We’ll start at the most important changes, which can be found at the back of the car. The 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged horizontally-opposed six-cylinder engine now makes an astounding 620 horsepower that it routes to the rear wheels only though a proper six-speed manual gearbox. With 90 more horsepower than the last GT2, the GT2 RS will warp to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds, hit 205 mph and lap the famous Nurburgring Nordschleife in just 7:18.
Helping the car achieve such incredible performance is the surgical removal of over 150 pounds from the curb weight, slimming the car down to just 3,020 pounds. Porsche’s surgeons found weight to be saved in the hood, a carbon-fiber piece now, and the even wider but still lighter single-lug wheels. Careful sculpting of the front and rear spoilers netted extra downforce and all together the modifications even improved fuel economy by five percent.
If the last GT2 was good at anything other than going fast, it was scaring inexperienced drivers. In that regard, the GT2 RS is actually slightly more civilized than its predecessor with standard Porsche Active Suspension Management and springs, anti-roll bars, engine mounts and stability control programming that is all unique to the GT2 RS. Additionally, Porsche will even let you disable the stability and traction control independently. Further handling duty is the domain of bespoke tires with a compound developed for this car alone and standard composite-ceramic brakes.
Inside the new ride, you’ll still be treated to a world wrapped in soft Alcantara. Seating is provided by two carbon fiber-reinforced plastic buckets and red accents brighten up the black cockpit. European cars will offer an optional roll cage, a feature that American buyers will have to procure after the fact due to DOT rules.
The 911 GT2 RS, claimed to be the fastest and most-powerful road-legal car in the company’s history, will make its grand debut at the Moscow motor show in August. Following the auspicious entrance, what few cars are exported to the U.S. will go on sale in October, though we expect them to all be spoken for well before then. Sure, $245,000 is a hefty premium over the old car’s $192,560 base price, but we don’t think for a minute that will stop anyone with the means from snapping one up. The line starts here.
