General Motors sold 226,402 vehicles in October 2013, a 15.7-percent year-over-year increase that puts the automaker’s year-to-date sales up 8.3 percent versus the first ten months of 2012. Among the bright spots in GM’s sales performance were healthy increases from the Buick and Cadillac premium brands. Last month was far healthier for GM than September, when the company saw its sales tumble 11 percent year-over-year.
Winner: Chevrolet Silverado, 42,660 sales, up 10.1 percent
Another month of strong sales helped push the Chevrolet Silverado to a 19.7-percent year-to-date improvement over the first ten months of last year. The redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Silverado is clearly attracting customers to showrooms, and this month the high-end Silverado High Country (and accompanying GMC Sierra Denali) pickups reach showrooms. Although the Silverado beat out the Ram pickup line’s sales (29,846), it couldn’t catch up to the impressive pace set by the Ford F-Series (63,803).
Winner: Chevrolet Malibu, 15,746 sales, up 63.5 percent
The Chevrolet Malibu posted another strong month after impressive sales in September, suggesting that the revamped 2014 model is helping lure buyers to showrooms. If this trend continues, it could quickly reverse the Malibu’s misfortunes: so far this year, the car’s sales are down 9.7 percent year-over-year.
Winner: Chevrolet Impala, 11,713 sales, up 40.0 percent
The new Chevrolet Impala continues to gain sales ground, too, although despite strong results this month and in September, overall this year the Impala’s sales are 10.6-percent off the pace set in 2012. The good news is that GM combines sales figures for the all-new Chevrolet Impala and the fleet-only Impala Limited, which will help bolster the nameplate’s sales volume for some time.
Winners: Chevrolet Suburban, up 57.1 percent; Chevrolet Tahoe, up 51.4 percent; GMC Yukon/Yukon XL, up 42.0 percent
GM has already revealed the 2015 Suburban, Tahoe, and Yukon SUVs that will go on sale next year, yet sales of the current models are booming. Part of that is due to the fact that, according to Automotive News data, GM has offered anywhere from $1500 to $3000 in cash incentives on the full-size SUVs in a bid to rid dealers of old stock before the new models arrive.
Loser: Chevrolet Cruze, 16,087 sales, down 15.9 percent
The Cruze has long been one of Chevrolet’s top-selling models, but last month it struggled despite growing overall through the first ten months of the year. As a result, The Chevrolet Cruze became only the fourth best-selling GM vehicle, trailing the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, and Chevrolet Equinox. Across town, the rival Ford Focus also saw its sales slip 17.5 percent year-over-year in October.
Loser: Chevrolet Volt, 2022 sales, down 31.7 percent
A price cut and various revisions haven’t been enough to keep the Chevrolet Volt in buyers’ minds, as the plug-in hybrid model continues to see sales slip. Though never one of GM’s strongest selling models, so far this year Volt sales are down 2.7 percent year-over-year, at just 18,782 units through the first ten months of the year.
