It’s always big news when the President stops by, and President Obama was recently in the Detroit area to pay the Chevrolet Volt’s Hamtramck plant a visit.
As the President toured the facility and drove a Volt for 10 feet (which he described as “pretty smooth”), Chevy also announced it would be bumping Hamtramck’s production total to 45,000 units in 2012. The current figure of 30,000 was deemed too low for demand as GM reports over 25,000 people have joined its interest list over the span of a few weeks. The Volt will first be launched in California, Connecticut, Michigan, New York, New Jersey, Texas, and Washington, D.C., although an exact dealer schedule has not been revealed yet. The first few production examples are due off the line by the end of the year and the Volt starts from $41,000, including a $725 destination charge. A $350-per-month lease will be offered to eligible customers.
