General Motors reported its July 2013 sales figures this morning, with a strong showing for all four brands and the company as a whole. GM’s U.S. sales were up 16.3 percent over last July, coming in at 234,071 vehicles. Year-to-date volumes rose 9.1 percent over the same period last year, ringing in at 1,654,417 units. Perhaps more impressively, all four of its U.S. brands – Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, and GMC – saw volumes increase year-over-year last month.
Winner: Chevrolet Camaro; 7969 sales, up 15.1 percent
While the muscle car wars may be far from over, the Chevrolet Camaro continues to sit pretty atop the heap once again. With 7969 sales in July, the Camaro blew past the Mustang and the Challenger, surpassing the Ford by 2201 copies and the Dodge by 3698 copies. We wouldn’t be surprised if there weren’t some incentives at play here: a revised 2014 Camaro goes on sale later this year, so we’re sure that dealers are working to hustle the remaining 2013 models out the door. The summer’s warm temperatures across much of the country probably didn’t hurt Camaro sales either, given that it and the Corvette are the only convertibles in GM’s stable. That said, year-to-date Camaro sales are off slightly from 2012, the 50,281 sales through July of 2013 represents a decrease of 11.2 percent from the same period last year.
Winner: Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra; 42,080 and 16,582 sales, up 45.2 and 49.3 percent, respectively
General Motors has played some serious catch up in the pickup truck arena. The introduction of the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra earlier this summer surely helped to buoy GM’s truck sales, and we’re sure that the heavy discounts being offered the 2013 models were partly responsible for the huge month-over-month increases for GM’s two main trucks. While neither the Chevy nor the GMC manage to individually touch the Ford F-Series massive 60,449 sales (the Silverado sold 42,080 last month and the Sierra sold 16,582), combined, General Motors fell just 1787 units short of the Blue Oval. Year-to-date sales of both the Silverado and Sierra are also up; the former has sold 284,666 copies so far in 2013, and the latter has moved 104,215, up 27.4 and 24.0 percent, respectively. With the continued roll out of the 2014 trucks and the imminent debut of new heavy-duty variants, expect the gap between Ford and GM to stay slim.
Winner: Chevrolet Spark; 3847 sales, up 163.5 percent
When looking at General Motors’ sales sheet, the Spark minicar’s sales numbers look itty-bitty. However, the cheap and cheery Chevrolet saw the largest percent jumps from last year, when the car went on sale. So far, Chevrolet has sold 21,435 Sparks through July, an increase of 1368.2 percent, given that the Spark had only just gone on sale at this time last year. Selling just shy of 4000 copies last month, the Spark was up 163.5 percent from July of last year. Compared with its main rival, the Fiat 500, the Spark is won July by 1026 units, but trails by a scant 2457 units year-to-date.
Loser: Buick Regal; 1187 sales, down 33.5 percent
The Buick Regal continues to take a sales beating. After the introduction of the smaller Verano last year, Regal sales have continued to take a tumble. It seems that Buick may have been able to slow the hemorrhaging, however, with July 2013 sales down to 1187 copies from July 2012′s 1784. (Unfortunately, that still is a 33.5-percent tumble.) Year-to-date numbers are off by roughly 6000 units – 10,007 in 2013 versus 16,612 in 2012, a 39.8-percent drop. Expect things to hopefully improve soon, as the heavily revised 2014 Regal goes on sale. The Verano, meanwhile, continues to maintain its position of Buick’s second-best seller, after the Enclave crossover.
Loser: Cadillac CTS; 2889 sales, down 39.1 percent
You can’t really blame the old bird for running out of steam when she gets surrounded by newer, younger, and prettier things. Such is the tale of the Cadillac CTS – after the XTS and ATS were introduced, the CTS’ sales began to fall, and the current model is now a lame-duck, a placeholder in Cadillac showrooms until the all-new 2014 CTS makes its way to showrooms this fall. Until then, CTS sales continue to shrink: down 39.1 percent last month to 2889 copies, and down 40.4 percent year-to-date to 18,022 copies.
Still Dead: Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon; 207 and 22 sales, down 94.9 and 96.9 percent
Yes, GM discontinued the Colorado and Canyon last year. Yes, there are still copies available, brand-new on dealer lots. We can’t say we blame buyers for snatching up the last few of these midsize pickups before they’re all gone, since their replacements won’t be ready for at least another year.
