General Motors is investing $133 million into its Wentzville, Missouri assembly and stamping plant this week. The additional investment will create or retain 55 jobs and will help the facility prepare to build the upcoming 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and 2015 GMC Canyon midsize pickups.
The new investment will go toward the addition of a third stamping machine to create body panels. The additional $133 million is on top of a $380-millon investment announced by General Motors at the end of 2011 for the Wentzville facility to get ready for the next-generation Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. The third stamping machine isn’t expected to come online until early 2015; construction of it begins next month.
Currently, the Wentzville plant employs approximately 2000 workers, split between two shifts, and produces the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-size vans.
General Motors already sells a new version of the Chevrolet Colorado overseas (pictured), and has confirmed that the U.S. will get a follow-up to the Colorado and its GMC Canyon twin, which were discontinued after 2012. It’s expected that the new trucks will bow at some point within the next 12 to 18 months, which lines up with the timeline for the aforementioned Colorado/Canyon stamping machine. The 2015 Colorado and Canyon are expected to grow in size; the trucks will likely be larger than the compact Toyota Tacoma, but not as so large as to step on the toes of their Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra siblings.
We’ve previously caught the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado out testing, and while it looks to carry many cues from the export-market truck, our Colorado will have its own unique design cues. Power is expected to come from one of GM’s bread-and-butter engines: the Cadillac ATS’ 2.5-ilter I-4, the Chevy Sonic’s 2.0-liter turbo-four, or maybe the well-known 3.6-liter V-6. It’s yet to be seen if one of the Duramax diesels offered overseas will be offered in the U.S.
