It may only be the “preferred bidder” at this stage and not actually an owner, but Chinese automaker Zhejang Geely Holding Group is already revealing plans for its purchase of Volvo Cars.

The first? Geely hopes it can boost global Volvo sales to nearly a million units annually. Sound optimistic? That’s nearly double the volume Volvo sold in 2008.

Geely hopes to tackle this thanks in no small part to extra capacity. Geely plans to build a new plant in China that would be capable of building nearly 300,000 vehicles a year, expanding Volvo’s presence in the Chinese market. Geely believes it can sell nearly 200,000 Volvos each year in China alone, which is a significant increase from the brand’s current Chinese volume (roughly 13,000 cars).

Automotive News also says Volvo is likely to add two or three bigger, flagship offerings to the Volvo lineup in the next four years. We’re not sure if these offerings would be for global markets, or exclusive to China. Volvo already markets a long-wheelbase S80 (the S80L) within the country, catering to Chinese luxury car buyers who prefer to be coddled in luxury while being chauffeured.
