Calling it “every car lover’s dream,” Opel unveiled the Astra GTC today with plenty of hyperbole. “Some people call [the GTC] a hot hatch, and I think that’s correct,” said Vauxhall/Opel CEO Karl-Friedrich Stracke. “It looks hot and it feels hot when you drive it.”
Positioned as a competitor to the Volkswagen Scirocco, the Astra GTC is a striking coupe-hatchback. It joins the Astra hatchback and Astra Sports Tourer wagon, which are already on sale in Europe. The Astra GTC wears swoopy, aggressive curves; a big roof spoiler; and bold wheel designs. Inside, too, is a sharp interior that looks just as appealing as that of the Scirocco.
Backing up the looks are five different engines, ranging from 100 hp to 180 hp. The 1.7 CDTI diesel is the most efficient, with 110 hp or 130 hp depending on tune; the 0-to-62-mph run takes a claimed 10.0 seconds. Gutsier models include a 2.0-liter turbodiesel with 160 hp.
All Astra GTC models get General Motors’ HiPer Strut front suspension, which helps fight torque steer while maintaining steering feel. Opel says the GTC hatchback is almost entirely different from other Astra models, even down to the different track and wheelbase. Only the door handles and antenna are shared between the wagon, hatcback, the GTC.
