Four Doors for 6: BMW Plans Four-Door Model for Next-Generation 6 Series Lineup

2010 Bmw Gran Coupe Concept Front Three Quarter View

In 2007, BMW showed us the stunning CS concept that came close to entering production as an 8 Series flagship. Three years later, a four-door coupe is likely in BMW’s future once again, albeit this time it will be part of the 6 Series portfolio.

As we reported in the July 2010 print issue of Automobile, the BMW Gran Coupe concept — shown at the 2010 Beijing motor show — will be an expansion of the existing 6 Series lineup, joining the existing coupe and convertible instead of replacing them. An anonymous corporate source also confirmed to Autocar that the sedan will likely reach production in the second quarter of 2012.

The 6 Series sedan — like its coupe and convertible siblings — will ride on the platform used for the new 2011 5 Series sedan, but will differentiate itself from the other four-door with racy styling and a much lower roofline. The profile could render it a direct competitor to both the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class and the forthcoming Audi A7. Expect the 6 Series sedan to utilize a range of inline-six and V-8 engines, along with an eight-speed automatic sourced from ZF.

No launch date has been announced for the next-generation 6 Series, but keep your eyes open for previews at upcoming auto shows.
