When the new Ford Transit van arrives in showrooms, customers will have a choice between an Ecoboost V-6 and a diesel engine option announced today.
We first learned about Ford’s new workhorse last December, when the automaker said it will receive the 3.5-liter Ecoboost, turbocharged V-6. Now, Ford says the Transit will also launch with a fuel-efficient turbo diesel mill as well. Details on the oil-burner haven’t been released, though there’s a possibility we could get one of the engines offered in the Tourneo Custom van, recently unveiled in Europe. The Tourneo, shown in the pictures below, gets three turbodiesel options powering the front wheels: First is a 2.2-liter, inline-four that puts out 98 hp, while the other two engines produce 123 hp and 153 hp. Those engines are mated to a six-speed manual; transmission choices haven’t been announced for the U.S.-spec Transit, which will not look like the Torneo but the current-generation Transit van. Currently, the Ford E-Series vans are offered with 4.6- and 5.4-liter V-8s plus a 6.8-liter V-10 engine.
Further emphasizing the push for fuel efficiency is a new fleet emissions calculator, a proprietary program that customers can use to analyze their Transit’s carbon footprint and fuel costs. The calculator relies on a long list of variables including traffic conditions and fuel type being used.
The new Transit van will eventually replace the E-Series Wagon and E-Series Van. Ford claims the Transit should be 25 percent more efficient than the E-Series thanks to the new engines and weight savings of at least 300 pounds. Ford says “certain E-Series bodystyles will continue to be available through most of the decade in North America, even after the U.S.-built Transit goes on sale.” The Transit will start production at the automaker’s plant in Kansas City, Missouri early next year.
