Ford will launch its 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine in a 2014 Riley Technologies Daytona Prototype racing car at the 24 Hours of Daytona, the company announced today. The twin-turbocharged racer will compete in all 12 United SportsCar Championship races after debuting at Daytona on January 25-26, 2014.
The 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 is found in many Ford products, where the automaker claims it can produce the power of a V-8 without using as much fuel. There’s no word on how much power the engine makes when heavily modified for race use by Michael Shank Racing, which will campaign the EcoBoost-powered car, although the 2014 Ford F-150 Tremor extracts 365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque from the engine.
“We’re proud to bring a direct-injected, twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine to the United SportsCar Championship in a field of competitive V8-powered entries,” Ford Racing director Jamie Allison said in a statement. “We want to show Ford EcoBoost’s capabilities as an engine that provides both performance and fuel economy, on and off the track.”
Ford also plans for the race car to attempt to break the speed record at Daytona. On October 9, Michael Shank Racing will test the EcoBoost-powered car in a bid to beat the 210.364-mph lap record set at Daytona in 1987 by NASCAR racer Bill Elliot. That time was set by Elliot’s Ford Thunderbird NASCAR car while qualifying for the Daytona 500.
The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 is currently available in the Ford F-150, Ford Explorer Sport, Ford Flex, Ford Taurus SHO, Lincoln MKS, and Lincoln MKT.
