Ford’s newest turnkey race car, the Focus ST-R, will make its race debut at Daytona International Speedway this Friday. The ST-R is scheduled to compete in the Grand-Am 200 race as part of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.
The Focus ST-R was prepared in partnership with Ontatio-based Multimatic Motorsports, which also helps prep other Ford Racing entrants like the Mustang FR500C and Mustang Boss 302R. The car was originally designed for North American touring car races, though Ford also hopes teams will enter the ST-R in European races like the 24 Hours of Nürburgring.
Though based on the road-going Focus hatchback — and bearing many similarities to the forthcoming Focus ST street car — Ford stresses that the ST-R is a pure-bred race machine. Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter EcoBoost inline-four engine, rated at 250 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque, which drives the front wheels by way of a six-speed manual transmission. The car gains an upgraded clutch, exhaust, radiator, engine computer, and oil cooler from the Ford Racing group.
Stripping the car’s interior to fit a roll cage and race seats has trimmed curb weight to about 2700 pounds. The chassis receives adjustable dampers from AST Performance, lightweight 18-inch wheels, larger brakes with race-spec pads, and a unique Ford Racing tune for the electric power steering.
In addition to serving as a halo race car for Ford Racing, the Focus ST-R will be available to individuals by special order through Ford dealerships. Doing so will provide amateur teams with a ready-to-race car designed to be competitive in race series like Grand-Am.
