The FIA has finalized its engine regulations for 2011 World Rally Championship, and Ford is already stepping up the development of its new 2011 Fiesta RS WRC. The hot hatch replaces the successful Focus RS World Rally Car, winner of 42 rallies since 1999 and two constructor’s championships in 2006 and 2007.
Lucky for them, Ford and partner M-Sport already had intel indicating that the FIA would implement a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine standard for the S2000-classified racers. It’s Duratec-derived, of course, and is currently undergoing tuning and development by renowned French constructor Pipo Moteur.
Also helping the accelerated development is M-Sport’s already well-established Fiesta S2000 program. Their racecar (shown) won its debut race in Monte Carlo last January. Unlike the 2011 car, this one utilizes a 280-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo Duratec I-4. Engineers promise the two will be distinct in appearance, and given the new regulations, most likely in potency too.
