The latest example of the engine downsizing trend just rolled off the line in Europe. Ford’s new 1.0-liter EcoBoost I-3 goes into production earlier this week at the company’s Cologne Engine Plant in Germany. Ford has designed the new turbocharged three-banger to produce the power of a 1.6-liter I-4, and the fuel economy and CO2 emissions of a smaller engine.
The new 1.0-liter EcoBoost I-3 comes in two flavors: a 99-hp version, hooked up to a five-speed manual, and a 118-hp and 125 lb-ft of torque version that’s bolted to a six-speed manual. Ford plans on rolling out the two EcoBoost engines under the hood of the European Focus first, with the C-Max and B-Max following soon after. Ford said that the 118-hp version can achieve 5.0 l/100 km on the European test cycle, which equates to roughly 47 U.S. mpg.
Ford aims to spread production of the EcoBoost three-pot to Romania early next year and then eventually overseas, with the ultimate goal being an annual worldwide production of up to 1.3 million engines per year. While initially only for sale in Europe, Ford plans an eventual roll-out worldwide in the future under the One Ford initiative. While not yet officially confirmed by Ford, some reports have hinted that the 118-hp variant will be a likely candidate for the North American Fiesta. The 1.0-liter turbocharged EcoBoost offers the same power as the Fiesta’s current 1.6-liter I-4, while producing more torque (125 lb-ft versus 112 lb-ft) and potentially better fuel economy.
