Seems like we just can’t get enough of the summer auto show season. Last weekend, in addition to Bloomington Gold, the nationally acknowledged enthusiast gathering for Chevrolet Corvette owners, there was a separate gathering for another of America’s sports cars in Dearborn, Michigan: the Ford Thunderbird.
Dearborn played host to scores of Thunderbirds of all vintages on Saturday, in advance of Sunday’s haphazard mix of tornado warnings and flash floods in the area. Owners whose license plates spanned the continental 48 and Canada set up shop in the parking lot adjacent to Ford World Headquarters, known informally as “the Glass House.”
The weekend represented the 55th anniversary of the T-Bird, launched in 1955 as a Corvette competitor. During the two days leading up to the public show, owners had the chance to visit the Ford grounds on a private tour. The show, held Saturday afternoon, was designed to represent and show off every model year of Thunderbird. The models were a Technicolor reminder of how the Thunderbird has evolved over the last half-century.
