McLaren has been teasing us with videos, photos, and details of its production-intent MP4-12C supercar for nearly a year now, but the wait appears to be ending. The British sports car firm announced today that it’s finally starting to build the first 1000 examples of its all-new supercar.
In order to build the new supercar, McLaren invested some £40 million ($64 million) in a bespoke production facility next to its Formula 1 workshop in Woking, England. This manufacturing facility, however, isn’t completely finished yet, and won’t be until May of this year. For now, the MP4-12Cs will be assembled alongside parts for McLaren’s MP4-26 F1 competitor. This makes the first MP4s even more special to own — at least to motorsports enthusiasts.
During the first year of production, McLaren says it plans on building roughly 1000 vehicles, while eventually ramping production up to 4000 cars annually. This will be accomplished by adding a number of MP4-12C variants, including a convertible, a hybrid (using McLaren’s F1-derived KERS system), and a successor to the vaunted F1
While 1000 units per year of a $229,000 supercar might seem like a lot, McLaren doesn’t have any doubts about selling every single car it produces. According to the company, the first two years of production were spoken for by the end of its first public appearance at last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. This already gives the automaker roughly the same size of waiting list as its Italian competitor, Ferrari. McLaren also feels that having two F1 World Champions bragging about the car also can’t hurt the car’s reputation (see video below).
“In five years, the MP4-12C has evolved from a concept we developed in our own Formula 1 simulator, to a groundbreaking, high-performance sports car offering unique technologies and outstanding dynamic performance,” said Antony Sheriff, managing director of McLaren Automotive. “It has been an intensive development program, but now the fun really begins as our future owners look forward to taking delivery of their 12Cs.”
