Project Super Bee, the long-dormant project car of Hot Rod Magazine editor-in-chief David Freiburger, is awakened from its 15-year slumber, and prepared for a cross-desert journey and jaunt down the dragstrip for Moparty at the Strip in Las Vegas. The 1970 Dodge Super Bee was Freiburger’s first car, and built up as a project car in the late ’90s. Staff editor Mike Finnegan is enlisted to help re-build the car in record time, only seven days away from the event.
The car has a massive 484 cubic-inch Hemi V-8, which at one time made 750 horsepower, but due to the aggressive cam profile, made all the power on the high end of the tach. Freiburger explains the new approach they’re taking in putting in a more conservative cam netting 675 hp, but with a nitrous oxide system installed, the engine should produce 900 horsepower.
Along with the reformulated engine, the rear end has been changed from a super-short drag-optimized 5.13 gear ratio to a more relaxed & streetable 3.73 ring and pinion. Miraculously, the car came together in time for the road trip and event, and managed to run a respectable 11.84 quarter-mile at 115 miles per hour. Unfortunately, the massive power from the nitrous-huffing Hemi blew first and second gear in the transmission, but Freiburger was able to limp the car back home to Southern California in third (no doubt aided by the copious torque of the Hemi) for a post-mortem on the trans, and preparation for even faster times in the future.
