Feature Flick: We Drive The 2011 BMW 1 Series M Coupe

We’ve certainly seen plenty of video hype for the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, what with a variety of BMW-issued clips of the car drifting through the countryside or weaving its way through concrete walls. But for a real taste of what the 1 Series M is like to drive, West Coast Editor Jason Cammisa got behind the wheel in California.

As he explains in this video, Cammisa believes the new 1 Series is the car for drivers who actually enjoy driving. Its compact dimensions, standard manual transmission, and tail-out antics all hearken more to the original E30-generation BMW M3 than the current, V-8-powered M3.

Oh, and don’t get him started on people who buy the M3 with its optional M DCT transmission. Cammisa has no time for people who buy an M3 — ostensibly a driver’s car — and let a computer decide when to shift gears. That’s why he’s so pleased that the 1 Series M Coupe offers only a true, shift-it-yourself manual transmission.
