It’s all about the Mercedes-Benz Unimog on the newest episode of Ignition. Host Jonny Lieberman travels to Germany to get behind the wheel of a Unimog U4000 and discovers that the off-roader is truly built to thrive in dirt, deep water, and on steep inclines.
Part of what makes the Unimog so off-road capable is its portal axles, which provides almost double the ground clearance compared to a traditional setup. Then there’s the unique transmission with multiple reverse gears and a power take off unit that powers accessory items such as snowplows and farming tools.
Unimogs have been equipped with these features since its inception in the late 1940s. Lieberman explores the off-roader’s history in depth at the Unimog museum in Gaggenau, Germany, where visitors can view one of the oldest prototypes in existence. The museum also houses one of Lieberman’s most favorite Unimogs: a 1952 Swiss fire truck that features an extended wheelbase to meet a unique Swiss rule regarding fire vehicles.
