Ford recently announced that it was expanding its official partnership with Formula Drift. What better way than to have Formula D racer Vaughn Gittin Jr. drift his way around the Mustang’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant in his own Monster Energy Falken Tire Ford Mustang RTR.
Since 2004, Ford has built all Mustangs at the Flat Rock plant in Flat Rock, Michigan, outside of Detroit. Of the 500 pony cars built per shift, the workers pick five of those for an extensive quality test. Gittin plays along and “picks” his Mustang RTR for a test around the facility. By test, we mean three minutes of sideways sliding, tire smoking, and full-throttle V-8 aural delights from the assembly line to the test track and onto the car carrier. However, the test doesn’t go perfectly – Gittin manages to sideswipe a red 2013 Mustang coupe during one of the stunts.
As a reminder, the Monster Energy Mustang is powered by supercharged version of the 5.0-liter V-8 found in the Mustang GT upped to 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. (The stock 2013 Mustang GT is good for 420 hp and 390 lb-ft.) For fans who want to get a taste of the power in Gittin’s Mustang, he and Ford teamed up to create the Mustang RTR package that can be added onto either V-6 or V-8 2013 Mustangs.
