Mastering the skills of parallel parking can pose quite a challenge for some, and we understand why. In fact, there are numerous cars on the market that make parallel parking ease, or even do it for you. If you’re just a few inches off, a tap of the bumper on the car in front or behind you can result in nasty scratches. But for a World Guinness Record hopeful, one centimeter made all the difference between a prime parking job and an embarrassing accident.
You can’t help but cringe when you watch a German driver come mere millimeters away from smashing the rear of his Volkswagen Polo into the car behind him. A difference of one centimeter granted him a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records, beating the previous holder’s record of 27 cm. That record didn’t last long: Guinness says the Polo’s record has already been broken on the site of the company’s Chinese TV show with a car squeezing into a space just 24 centimeters bigger than the vehicle itself.
Thanks in part to its small size, the VW Polo fit snugly in between the two cars, but the driver can also thank the dirt that was carefully placed in the path of where the wheels would slide—we can’t imagine what the aftermath would be otherwise. Dirt or no dirt, this parking maneuver is still impressive. Now, if he can attempt to drive out of that parking spot as smoothly as he got in, that would be the ultimate parking job.
