When a car receives a visual update, the automotive industry usually refers to the change as a facelift. Smart’s European advertising team has decided to play on that linguistic choice with a bizarre new TV commercial posted to YouTube, which highlights the tweaked 2012 version of the Smart ForTwo city car.
The brief clip shows close-up shots of various people who appear to have received plastic surgery, including the entertainer Amanda Lepore — with varying levels of results. Following the implication that facelifts aren’t always successful, the commercial shows the revised Smart ForTwo and offers the caption, “There is an exciting new facelift in town.”
Small car fanatics will recall that the Smart ForTwo receives a larger front grille, redesigned lower fascia, new wheels, and new side skirts for this year. The automotive facelift helps keep the ForTwo looking fresh, even though it has been on sale with only minimal changes for over a decade (though the Smart ForTwo only launched in the U.S. in 2008).
Smart also has revealed a special Ice Shine model set to debut in the U.S. this fall, and has collaborated again with Brabus to build a 10th anniversary edition of the Brabus Smart ForTwo. You can watch the surreal facelift commercial below.
