For 2013, Mercedes-Benz has given the venerable G-Class some retouching. Some new LEDs here, new gauges there, a wallop of power — and, for the first time that we can remember, a set of fun commercials touting more than just the SUV’s off-road prowess.
The two 24-second spots below both showcase fashionable young people using their G63 AMGs to take whatever path they choose and having fun while doing it. In the first spot, “Style,” a brunette bombshell takes the backroads to get to her swank nightclub. She cakes the G in a thick coat of mud that happens to coordinate with her outfit, and the on-screen text reminds us that the G-Class is now available in 21 different colors from the factory. “Navigation” showcases the G’s new three-dimensional navigation system…for those who need it; clearly, the couple piloting this G63 doesn’t need it as they bound across gravel paths and through desert landscapes.
As a quick refresher, the 2013 Mercedes G-Class saw the addition of LED running lights, a gaping front fascia for AMG models, and an all-new interior. The G550 carries over its 5.5-liter V-8 engine making 388 hp, but the G63 AMG replaces now-gone G55 AMG with a 544-hp direct-injected twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8. Other markets will also get the just plain crazy 612-hp, twin-turbocharged, 6.0-liter V-12 engine-powered G65 AMG.
Pricing has yet to be announced, but the 2012 G55 started at $107,100 and the 2011 G55 AMG started at $124,450, both including destination, so expect to open your checkbooks wide when the 2013 models hit dealerships in August.
