Nine times out of ten, you can’t actually replicate the outlandish feats you see in television advertising. That didn’t stop one Lexus owner from trying to stack wine glasses on the hood of his LS sedan.
Set your wayback machines to 1989. To help launch the brand and support its tagline of “The Relentless Pursuit of Perfection,” Lexus‘ marketing gurus shot an ad spot where 15 glasses are stacked atop the hood of an LS 400 sedan placed on a dynamometer. A driver then ran the LS’s engine through its rev band, and the unfazed glasses served as an illustration of the silky-smooth powertrain lurking beneath the surface.
Let’s now fast-forward 22 years. One owner of a current LS 460, apparently with nothing better to do, wanted to see if the trick could be replicated. A first attempt with a half-dozen glasses proved successful, but a second run with twice as many glasses was not.
Interesting, but Lexus’ current marketing team thought it was worth testing themselves, and quickly crafted a video rebuttal of sorts. It seems in order to properly achieve the stunt, the front end of the LS needs to be raised — as it was in the 1989 commercial — to create a level surface for stacking glasses (even the LS owner notes it’s hard to stack stemware on the LS’ sloping hoodline). Secondly, Lexus recommends finding high quality wine glasses in order to ensure consistency among the glasses.
In its response, Lexus revved a 2011 LS 460 to 5300 RPM, successfully completing the task with all 15 filled glasses remaining stacked. To further prove its point, Lexus pulled the same stunt on a 1989 LS 400, which also accomplished the task triumphantly.
