In previous Feature Flicks, Motor Trend’s Carlos Lago and Jonny Lieberman have track-tested the 2013 BMW M5 with the dual-clutch transmission as well as compared it against the Porsche Panamera GTS. On this Feature Flick, Lago tests the 2013 BMW M5 with the six-speed manual-transmission to see it works as well in the large German sedan.
As expected, the manual-transmission-equipped M5 is about a half-second slower to 60 mph and in the quarter-mile versus the dual-clutch car with launch control, but as Lago explains, those who buy a manual transmission over a dual-clutch aren’t buying it because it’s faster, rather they are buying the car for the driving experience of shifting it themselves.
While not every car is better with a dual-clutch transmission,cars designed with only dual-clutch transmission, like the Ferrari 458 Italia, wouldn’t be better with a manual.
